Rumors have suggested that Fumito Ueda, who is the leader of the Team Ico development team and is well known for creating Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, is set to quit parent company Sony and become a freelancer.

It seems that the developer will continue to work on The Last Guardian, his current project, in his new capacity although it’s not clear whether another developer will take on the leading role.

The information has been delivered to Eurogamer by a source in the Japanese game development sector, who added that the Ueda issues is just one of the problems that The Last Guardian has been facing in the last years of development.

The game was first announced in February of 2007 and has since been shown at a number of Tokyo Game Show events.

Both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus have taken about four years to develop and The Last Guardian was set to arrive during the fall of 2011 before getting an official delay to an unannounced date in 2012.

Sony has stated that it does not comment on what it considers as rumor and speculation and the game developer refused to offer a direct reaction.

The plot of The Last Guardian will be linked to a yet unnamed boy who will try to escape from the ruins of a gigantic structure with the help of a fantastical creature that seems like a slimmer griffin, named Trico.

The boy and the creature will have to learn to work together in order to tackle specific challenges and, as the game progresses, the two will develop a better understanding and will be able to access more abilities and powers.

Ueda has stated that the story of the game will be open ended and that the actions of the player will determine the exact epilogue.

The Last Guardian is exclusive to the PlayStation 3.
