When they were promoting together the first “Sherlock Holmes,” co-stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law seemed incredibly close. Things have drastically changed now – and it’s all because of Mel Gibson, a new report suggests.

The two actors are back to work with director Guy Richie on the sequel to “Sherlock Holmes” but the chemistry between them has diminished because of diverging opinions on Mel Gibson’s recent antics.

Gibson repeatedly made headlines in 2010 for allegedly being abusive, both physically and verbally, to ex-lover and the mother of his baby, Oksana Grigorieva, as fans must know.

While Downey continues to be supportive of his friend Mel, Jude thinks he should cut all ties with him and this has caused lots of friction between them, a new report in The National Enquirer says (story via here).

What’s worse is that, as noted above, they’re working on “Sherlock Holmes 2” and, if things are not right between them, this could also seep into their onscreen relationship.

“RDJ has remained friends with Mel, and he’s publicly supported Mel over the last year, and ‘that’s not sitting well with Jude. Robert and Mel talk nearly every day, and Jude just can’t get his head around it,’ said a source,” the tabloid writes.

Admittedly, Jude believes Robert should end things with Gibson once and for all, and not publicly support him when it’s clear he acted so despicably.

“Jude thinks what Mel did to Oksana was appalling, and he doesn’t think Hollywood should be supporting someone who’s behaved that way. In Jude’s mind, Mel’s reputation is also tarnished for his disgraceful behaviors beyond Oksana,” says a spy.

“Jude thinks he’s been given enough second chances, and it annoys him that RDJ has allegiances to him,” the insider dishes.

Because of this, because of Mel Gibson, the two actors and former good friends barely speak to each other between scenes on “Sherlock Holmes 2.”
