They are always more polished than the first ones

Resistance 2 is the sequel to one of the most popular FPS (First Person Shooter) games made for the PlayStation 3 console. The original, Resistance: Fall of Man, put the player in the shoes of an ordinary Army sergeant, Nathan Hale, in a fictional 1950s era where the Earth is plagued by a terrible virus called Chimera, which transforms every person infected into a blood thirsty mutant. The sequel takes Hale to the United States where he, together with a commando of soldiers immune to the Chimera virus, fight against the mutants that threaten to invade the country.

Recently, Ted Price, president and CEO of Insomniac Games, the developer of the title, sat down with Reuteurs and discussed about the advantages of sequels to already successful games. He went on to say that sequels were very good because the developers already had the gameplay mechanics and story elements there, and all they needed was to improve certain aspects.

"The game's story and art style have a solid base, the tech and tools are stable and the basic gameplay mechanics have gone through plenty of tuning in the first game. It's certainly a liberating experience when you're no longer arguing over the main character's name, or waiting for basic systems to be implemented. The end result is usually a game that's bigger, more polished and has more innovative features than the original game."

Quite an interesting point of view from this developer but there were cases when the sequels to successful titles failed miserably just because the studios couldn't elaborate the story and other elements from the first games. The developers are walking a very fine line when they decide to create a sequel to a popular game. On one hand they need to create something fresh and exciting so people won't say they just copied the first title, and on the other hand, they must keep the game similar to the first one, so as not to disappoint the fans.

All that's left for us to do until Resistance 2 is shipped, on November 4 for North America and on the 28th for Europe, is to hope that Insomniac did a great job with it and keep playing the first title to quench our Resistance thirst.
