The time that has passed since the launch of the original Company of Heroes has allowed the development team at Relic to distill the best elements of the game and to get a solid image of what a sequel has to expand on and simplify in order to satisfy the player base.

Greg Wilson, a producer working on Company of Heroes 2, told MCV Pacific that, “We’ve had a ton of time to think about this sequel and other games come and go in between the titles, and they’ve all gone into helping us make decisions about where we go with the franchise.”

He says, “What we realised when we came back to look at CoH2 was that we were really proud of what we’d originally built, and obviously it resonated with the fan base, with the original breaking a number of records.”

When it comes to the actual gameplay of Company of Heroes 2, Wilson states, “The gameplay will be very familiar to players who have played CoH before, but we’ve also tried to make certain elements easier to understand for players who are new to the franchise.”

The original Company of Heroes revolutionized the real-time strategy game space by eliminating direct resource harvesting and pushing players to secure control points on the map in order to encourage them to pursue offensive operations rather than turtling.

Company of Heroes 2 was rumored for some time, but it was only revealed earlier during the month by THQ and Relic and is currently set to arrive on the PC during next year.

The game will move the action to the Eastern Front of World War II, allowing gamers to battle as and against the Red Army.

Relic is promising both a better graphics engine and a more diverse gameplay for the strategy sequel.
