Klausner Technologies sues RIM and Motorola over Visual Voicemail patent infringement

Klausner Technologies, Inc. announced on Monday that it filed suits against Canadian Mobile phone maker Research In Motion and against Motorola, Inc. for patent infringements regarding the Visual Voicemail. Klausner Technologies is a company that owns a number of 25 patents all around the world, on the basic Visual Voicemail feature that allows users to selectively view and listen on their mobile phones or computers to the voicemail messages they receive. It was founded by Judah Klausner, the inventor of the PDA and electronic organizer.

According to Klausner Technologies, the lawsuits are based on the introduction on the market of the RIM's “certain new 3G 'BlackBerry Bold 9700' mobile phones and Motorola’s new 'CLIQ' mobile phone, as all of these devices use Klausner Technologies' Visual Voicemail patented technology.

Moreover, the company also states that “various Blackberry models with the Visual Voicemail feature are already covered under Klausner Technologies Visual Voicemail patent licenses granted to mobile operators,” and that “various other Motorola models with the Visual Voicemail feature are already covered under Klausner Technologies Visual Voicemail patent licenses granted to mobile operators.”

Klausner Technologies also mentions that it currently has a number of 24 Visual Voicemail patent licensees and that some of them are leading wireless service providers, mobile phone makers, and cable/VOIP providers from the United States or from the European market. Moreover, the company further says that it has licensees from among other providers of Visual Voicemail services, as well. Both of the new lawsuits have been filed in the Eastern District of Texas by the California law firm of Dovel & Luner.

Up until now, neither of the two mobile phone makers has commented on the newly filed suits against them, yet they will certainly provide statements in the near future. However, the issue will most certainly be solved in shortly, especially since both handset vendors have devices that are “covered under Klausner Technologies Visual Voicemail patent licenses,” as the company states.
