A list of useful aplications to carry in your pocket

Many of us fight the problem of portability when we don't want to carry the laptop with us, a device that - despite becoming smaller every day - is still quite uncomfortable.

The idea would be for us to have some built-in applications that would function on any computer, without installation required.

This selection is almost entirely to be found on my 8 Gb memory stick and allows me to perform all my every-day activities, from any part of the world I might be, as long as there's a computer with an USB port and an Internet connection.

However, portability raises one problem, namely the security of the data stored on this device; that's why it is advisable for portable applications to allow the possibility of encrypting the information, at least where this is necessary.

Here is the list of applications:

1. Portable Firefox - FREEWARE - web browser which gives the possibility of surfing the Internet with absolutely no problems, especially if the host computer is affected by adware/spyware.

2. Portable Thunderbird - FREEWARE - POP3 client, which allows the user to access e-mail accounts.

3. Keepass Password Safe - FREEWARE - password manager with advanced features of encrypting the information.

4. Roboform2Go - TRIAL (39$) - Password manager, but especially form filler. This is a program without which surfing the net would be a very difficult task for me right now. It supports multiple identities, and the access is secure by means of a password. It offers various data encryption algorithms.

5. The Bat! Voyager - TRIAL (54$) - e-mail client with multiple features. As much as I've tried to change it, I couldn't find the same features in any other - either free or commercial - e-mail client. Its data security features are quite paranoid, but at the same time it's just as easy to use.

6. 7-Zip Portable - FREEWARE - a zip archiver that supports the most popular compression formats.

7. DeepBurner Free Portable - FREEWARE - portable application which allows CD and DVD writing.

8. Portable AbiWord - FREEWARE - a powerful text editor, which supports the most used formats (doc, rtf, html etc).

9. Portable OpenOffice.org - FREEWARE - a complete office suite, in portable version. This is a freeware alternative to the MS Office Suite.

10. Portable ClamWin - FREEWARE - a portable version of an open source antivirus.

11. Portable Filezilla - FREEWARE - a ftp client with multiple features.

12. Portable Gaim - FREEWARE - IM client with support for AOL/ICQ, IRC, Jabber, MSN, Yahoo etc.

13. Portable VLC Media Player - FREEWARE - an audio/video player, that plays the most popular formats, and no codecs installed on the system are required.

14. TrueCypt - FREEWARE - an encryption utility for the data stored on the special storing device or on the HDD. It ensures a powerful encryption, in real time.

I'm sure that most of you need only some of the programs presented above, but once you use them, these applications give you much more freedom of movement.
