Despite all the reliability problems that have plagued SSDs powered by SandForce’s second generation SSD processors, the number of solid state drives built using these controllers keeps on expanding on an almost daily basis, with PNY being the latest company to join the party.

The outfit made its entrance to this market with the release of the Professional SSD range of drives, which currently includes three models with capacities ranging from 120GB to 480GB.

At the heart of the 120GB and 240GB SSDS there stands the SandForce SF-2281 controller that PNY decided to pair with fast Intel synchronous NAND in order to reach read and write speeds of 550/520 MBps.

The 480GB model uses the same Intel NAND as its less spacious siblings, but this time PNY has swapped the SF-2281 controller with the SandForce SF-2282 that supports 400-pin TFBGA memory.

No matter the controller used, the maximum random write performance of the PNY drives is rated at 60,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second).

All of PNY Professional SSDs use the standard 2.5-inch notebook form factor and support SATA 6Gbps transfer speeds.

"PNY today added its fourth generation of SSDs to an already comprehensive range of upgrade and storage solutions,” said Jonathan Filleau, consumer product marketing manager EMEA.

"Consumers will be well aware of the experience and expertise at PNY's disposal when dealing with both Flash memory products and components, and should trust that when partnered with SandForce, we have manufactured a robust and reliable product," concluded the company’s rep.

The 120GB and 240GB versions of the PNY Professional SSDs are available right now in the UK from scan.co.uk with pricing being set at £151.19 and £282.00, respectively.

However, those of you who want to go for the larger 480GB drive will have to wait a bit longer as this SSD hasn’t yet reached retail.
