EA Sports, a division of publisher Electronic Arts, has announced the launch of PGA Tour Gold Challenge, a new Facebook-based video games which relies on one of its leading franchises, the Tiger Woods powered series of titles that are being created for gaming consoles.

The new game is based on the Unity3D tech and is free to play for all those interested in it.

The game is no mere social title and offers actual three dimensional gameplay on Facebook, with the player able to create a golfer and then outfit him with the needed cubs and gears before training and actually tackling some real golfing challenges.

Experience points need to be earned in order to get access to new items and to new courses and microtransactions are offered for those who want accelerated progress in their careers.

EA Sports has not talked about any link between the Facebook launched gold game and the main Tiger Woods PGA Tour franchise, such as shared content or bonuses in the main game for those who complete certain challenge in the free-to-play title.

Well-known courses like Pebble Beach Golf Links, The Old Course at St. Andrews and TPC Sawgrass will be available and the developers plan to deliver new events to keep the gaming base interested.

EA Sports has already had successful Facebook based launched for FIFA Superstars, which has attracted about 3.4 million players each month, and for Madden NFL Superstar, a game that is being played by 1.7 million people monthly.

PGA Tour Golf Challenge is lacking the Tiger Woods name, in another move which suggests that Electronic Arts is slowly moving away from the performance lacking and scandal stricken golfer.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: Masters is being prepared for the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Wii for late March and will introduce the Augusta course for the first time in the history of the series.
