Sony Ericsson has made the Xperia PLAY smartphone available for purchase in various markets around the world since several months ago, and it seems that the company might plan the release of a new colored flavor of the device.

We’re referring here to the Orange version of Xperia PLAY, the color flavor that was rumored back in summer, and which has just popped up now in a series of press photos.

Sony Ericsson has yet to make the new version of the mobile phone official but, until that happens, you can have a look at it courtesy of the said images, available via xperiablog.net.

Rumor has it that the new device version will become available for purchase in various regions around the world in the not-too-distant future, though it remains to be seen what exactly Sony Ericsson has in store for us.

The Orange Xperia PLAY comes with an anodized matte finish that increases its appeal, it seems.

Other than that, users should be able to benefit from the same specs and features that were available with the original flavor of the device.

The handset sports a 4-inch touchscreen display (480 x 854 pixels), complemented by a sliding game pad with all of the usual PlayStation buttons present on it.

Xperia PLAY is the first PlayStation-certified smartphone that Sony Ericsson launched on shelves, and it well deserves that name, since it is said to be capable of a great gaming experience.

The specs list of this mobile phone also includes a 1GHz application processor, which is complemented by 512MB of RAM and 400MB of internal memory, with a microSD memory card slot that can support cards of up to 32GB (an 8GB card included from the start).

The Xperia PLAY also arrives with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth capabilities, as well as with DLNA and Wi-Fi hotspot features, and with support for HSDPA and HSUPA.

Sony Ericsson’s smartphone is powered by the Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread operating system at the moment, but should get a taste of the newer Ice Cream Sandwich platform version sometime in 2012.
