In addition to posting an updated version of the PwnageTool app for the purpose of jailbreaking / unlocking an iPhone / iPod touch, the thoughtful iPhone Dev Team has again posted info on important aspects surrounding the latest update from Apple.

During its latest iPod event, Apple introduced iPhone OS 3.1 for iPhone and iPod touch (OS 3.1.1), delivering enhancements and fixes (including security fixes), on both platforms. The company thus made available the following downloads: - iPhone1,1_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw (241 MB) – first-gen iPhone; - iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw (242 MB) – iPhone 3G; - iPhone2,1_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw (306.2 MB) - iPhone 3GS; - iPod1,1_3.1.1_7C145_Restore.ipsw (unknown file size) – iPod touch, first generation; - iPod2,1_3.1.1_7C145_Restore.ipsw (unknown file size) - iPod touch second generation; - iPod3,1_3.1.1_7C145_Restore.ipsw (unknown file size) - iPod touch third generation.

As usual, the iPhone team mentions a Golden Rule for owners of a 3G iPhone unlocked with ultrasn0w - “You should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw,” the latest blog post reads. “Stay away from Apple’s direct updates,” the infamous team of iPhone hackers adds, referring to the baseband update present in the 3G 3.1 IPSW file from Apple. The hackers continue to explain what the baseband is, and what are the implications (for redsn0w users) of updating it.

“The ‘baseband’ is the generic nickname given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access,” the Team writes on its blog. “This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network. Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features). The 3.1 update for the iPhone 3G contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband,” the Dev Team concludes.

Softpedia doesn't condone jailbreaking / unlocking the iPhone / iPod touch or any other device. This article has a purely informational purpose and doesn't, in any way, suggest that you should hack your Apple device. Using hacks may render your device unusable, or may reduce the quality of your experience using the respective device. If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular-service provider.
