meemo continuously checks users' email accounts for new mail

OceanLake announced the launch of its mobile email service 'meemo' in Canada. Available via Alliant, Bell Mobility, Fido, MTS, Rogers, Sasktel and Telus Mobility network operators, the service notifies mobile users whenever a new message arrives in their email inbox.

meemo works by continuously checking the email accounts for new mail at specified time intervals selected by the user when setting up his meemo account. When the service detects that a new email has arrived in the inbox, it sends an alert to the user's phone number. The alert can be sent in the form of a SMS message or via WAP, depending on the service provider and the phone type.

When the alert reaches the mobile phone, it contains a unique URL address, which, upon clicking, will take the user directly to his meemo inbox. The inbox will contain an ordered list of all the emails received in the last 24 hours, with the latest messages appearing first. From there, the email (together with attachments) can be viewed, replied to or forwarded. Emails older than 24 hours will be automatically deleted from the meemo inbox, without deleting them from the actual email account. meemo can be used with up to two email accounts from the most popular email service providers. The service also includes a calendar that allows users to create events and then sends SMS messages to the mobile phone as reminders.

The Canadian release of meemo follows the recent launch of meemo in the U.S. "Having just launched meemo to the US market, we are very excited to be able to bring meemo to Canada where there are over 18 million wireless subscribers." said William Car, president and CEO of OceanLake. "meemo is well positioned to deliver the full richness of email to all of these consumers, while being as easy to use as text messaging."

Consumers can sign up for the meemo service here. The service is available for $5.00 per month plus data charges incurred from using the service, with the possibility of integrating the subscription cost directly into a consumer's phone bill. For those who want to test meemo before subscribing, OceanLake is offering a 14-trial of the service.
