The company gets ready to launch a Thunderbolt unit and the Intrepid 3

Right on the heels of the OCZ Agility 4 SSDs come the Intrepid 3, Z-Drive R5 and Lightfoot units, each with their own strengths and specializations.

OCZ has revealed the solid-state drives that will be on display in Taipei, during this year's Computex trade show (Computex 2012).

By this, we mean more than just the Z-Drive R4 CloudServ PCIe SSDs that are already available.

Not that they are in any way unimpressive, of course. 16TB storage units will get a nice reaction out of anyone really.

Still, the three drive lines that have yet to appear will have to get more attention here. Benefit of being the newcomers and all that.

First off there is the Intrepid 3 line, which uses the SATA III interface (SATA 6.0 Gbps) and achieves random input/output performance of 100,000 operations per second. As enterprise drives, they should be more productive than the Vertex 4.

The second SSD line is called “Lightfoot” and boasts the Thunderbolt connectivity interface, setting the top transfer speed at 10 Gbps. Capacities will range from 128 GB to 1 TB.

Strangely enough, the capacities of Intrepid 3 were not specified in the announcement, even though something else was.

We'll cut right to the chase: the Z-Drive R4 CloudServ PCIe SSDs aren't the only PCI Express SSDs that will make an appearance. The NAND Flash storage maker will also unveil the Z-Drive R5-series, powered by the co-developed OCZ-Marvell Kilimanjaro controller chip.

Again, no specifics were given, neither on the capacity nor on the performance, reliability and endurance advantages, so we'll have to wait.

Finally, the VXL Storage Accelerator software, for large-scale deployment of virtualized business environments, will be put through its paces.

For those who've forgotten, or just haven't learned yet, Computex 2012 will take place between June 06 and June 09.
