Great performance per value

Earlier this month, OCZ decided it was time to up the ante in the consumer Solid State Drive market by introducing a new series of Flash-based storage solutions, dubbed Apex Series SSDs. With the release, the Flash memory maker claimed that its new Apex series of SSDs was designed as a midrange solution providing users and system builders with a high-performance product that was also affordable, when compared to similar products currently available on the market.

However, while the company's claims are to be taken into consideration, most users prefer to read a detailed review of the product, to provide them with a better perspective on its performance level. On that note, PC Perspective took OCZ's Apex Series SSD and put it through its paces.

When released, OCZ claimed that its new Apex Series SSDs could provide read and write speeds of 230MB/s and 160MB/s, respectively, quite impressive for an MLC-based SSD product. The series can provide users with capacities of 60GB, 120GB and 250GB, featuring a 2.5-inch SSD and an excellent MTBF of 1.5 million hours. To that, you will have to add a price tag of $209, for the 60GB model and $839 for the 250GB model, which will offer you an overall perspective on what OCZ's Apex Series SSDs can provide you with.

According to the guys over at PC Perspective, OCZ's Apex series SSDs managed to outperform Intel's X25-M SSD, which, since its introduction, has changed the overall SSD market by offering an impressive performance level. The Apex Series SSD managed to provide better sustained write speeds but was slower in sustained read speeds, though only by a low margin.

As a conclusion, the Apex SSD from OCZ was claimed to be a great performer in comparison to other low-cost MLC drives, using a Jmicron controller, currently available on the market.
