Just as promised not too long ago, wireless carrier O2 UK started to roll-out the Android 2.1 software update for the Dell Streak tablet.

Currently available for purchase at the operator with the Android 1.6 platform version on board, the 5-inch slate promises enhanced performance as soon as the new OS version is installed on it.

Originally expected to start landing on September 1, the update started to arrive with a delay of a few days, for O2 wanted to make sure that all works well before delivering it to users.

The wireless carrier is delivering the solution over-the-air, but, in case there are some who can not get it this way, they can head over to the carrier's website to download and install it manually.

According to the wireless carrier, users should access the said web page on their Dell Streak tablets, and follow the instructions there.

A download link is provided there and, after users hit it, a “download is available” icon should emerge on their notification bar.

One would have to touch the "Android2.1update.pkg notification to install the software, and then hit the “Update now” button to install the software as soon as the “System update is ready to install” dialog box appears.

The device will reboot and install the software. During the software installation a status bar will be displayed. The device will not be able to make or receive calls during the update process. Once the installation is complete the device will restart,” the wireless carrier notes.

As soon as the new Android 2.1 update is installed on the Dell Streak, users should enjoy pinch-to-zoom multi-touch features, as well as support for multiple accounts and support for live wallpapers.

Moreover, the new update should enable 720p video recording on Dell Streak, while offering users access to a wider range of applications that before. A series of other enhancements should also be included in the new software update, it seems.

Before updating, users should also take into consideration the following:
- Data not stored on the SD card will be wiped. Applications can be re-downloaded from the Downloads tab in the Android Market.
- If you've less than 50% battery left, make sure you plug in the charger.
- The download will take approximately 15 minutes (depending on connection speed) and the installation about 15 more minutes.

Dell Streak owners should consider performing a backup of all data on their devices before launching the update process, just as to make sure that no important files are lost while installing Android 2.1.

Snap. I'm left with the Dell Start up Screen. Will email O2 and see what happens now.

On a Dell Streak purchased on O2 contract on Thursday, I downloaded the 2.1 update onto the unit, told it to "Upgrade Now" and the unit just froze. Unable to get it to reset to factory settings, today Saturday I returned it believing it had developed a serious problem and Carphone Warehouse replaced the unit with another new one. I have just downloaded the update again but onto a clean machine and repeated the installation instructions and this has died aswell. Anyone got any ideas.

I had the same problem. Remove the battery then after putting it back, power up the streak while holding the volume down key. Should be sorted, worked for me

well after downloading the software update via o2 it took forever to get my accounts to sync with google so i could use the marketplace i had to do a master reset in fact, i still cannot use the pc suite as it does not connect any longer even after deleting and re-installing so essentially the phone is useless as to put in contacts manually takes five minutes per person ( all comtacts were wiped too) and i cannot back up my streak therefore making it virtually useless

i did everything just as it is laid out above, as the update page instructed, but it did not restart itself, it is simply stuck on the black dell screen. i tried using the reset functions with no luck. the only way to switch the thing off is to take out the battery. having to use old phone untill monday when i will go to the 02 shop and see if anyone there can help. in the meantime i will scour the net for answers. not that half of it makes sence as im not a computer programmer and these things are so rarely in laymans terms. think twice about downloading!!!!!

I have done the 2.1 update and have so far not been impressed, so much so that I'm having to call the technical services people tomorrow. I can understand things being wiped but I now have a brick that will make calls but won't connect to the pc suite (which is useless anyway) It'll say it's connected to my wireless network but then won't connect to anything, app market I cant get past logging into google. It says my phone may not be provisioned for data services, was fine on android 1.6. As for making a backup, a good idea in principle, problem is when you've done it you can't get the info back on your phone....not impressed at all. factory reset just clears things but keeps you in android 2.1 ????? if updates are going to be released you would think that they would work......

Done the update... now the battery life sucks!! Used to last a day an a half... now only managed 3/4 of a day... the ability to edit photos has gone aswell! Give me 1.6 back!!

Upgrade went fine however it deleted all my downloaded apps and took the best part of Saturday afternoon remembering what I had installed and finding them again!

The update is not good with many of the features lost such as the forward facing camera option. I am not able to sync contacts with facebook now either. Would like O2 to offer the option to revert back to 1.6 until all bugs are fixed.

Will this update work on a non-O2 Dell Streak? I purchased my Dell Streak directly from Dell, I want to update to 2.1 (as 1.6 is borderline useless).

Have been waiting for 3 months now. :(

Comment #12 by: Paul on 06 Sep 2010, 17:14 UTC reply to this comment

Update installed fine but I have nearly 300 contacts and the Dell Suite doen't work anymore which is a big problem for me and a major major oversight on Dells behalf !!!
Spoke to o2 About this and it would appear that Dell are dragging there heels in replying to o2's technical team.
I think these software upgrades are rushed out too quick and the customer is the guinea pig nowadays.

After reading what the majority of users had to say about the 2.1 upgrade, I'm glad that mine didn't work.
