Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia has been long rumored to plan the launch of tablet PCs, although nothing has been confirmed on the matter as of now. However, it seems that the vendor has been working on such devices since 2011.

A patent application dated October 2011 shows that Nokia has considered the building of a mechanical keyboard / cover that would be integrated into a tablet device, and that could have been folded in multiple ways, depending on users’ needs.

Nokia did confirm several months ago that it was interested in the tablet segment of the market, and that it was watching it closely, but the company did not offer specific info on the possible commercial availability of such a device.

However, UnwiredView notes that such a slate might arrive on shelves as part of the Lumia lineup, and that it could run under Microsoft’s Windows 8 / Windows RT OS.
