Nokia Lumia 800, the first smartphone that the leading handset vendor brought to the market with the Windows Phone operating system on board, has just received its first award, being voted as the Mobile Phone of The Year at the What Mobile Awards 2011 in London.

The mobile phone was unveiled to the world last month during the Nokia World 2011 conference, and has been available for purchase in the UK and other European countries for a couple of days only.

However, it seems that the new device was indeed capable of impressing people, and that it managed to scoop the What Mobile Editor's Choice Award only one day after hitting the UK market.

This is a major win for Nokia, and can be added to a long list of industry recognitions that the Finnish mobile phone maker received for its Windows Phone device.

What Mobile Editor's Choice Award came to Nokia's Lumia 800 Windows Phone after thousands of readers have voted it as their favorite device during October.

“It's no secret that Nokia make great phones but with a new Windows Phone Mango operating system, great design and a competitive price,” What Mobile editor Richard Melville stated.

The Lumia 800 feels like real innovation for smartphones and, importantly, one that's cool enough to attract everyone from gadget geeks to casual, fashion conscious phone users.”

The handset has already registered great demand in the UK, and has proven a success during the pre-order period too in the country, as well as in France, where it landed a few days ago as well.

Starting with the next year, the mobile phone will be released in more markets around the world, and is expected to prove as successful there as well.

Undoubtedly, Nokia does need a handset to help it regain its foothold in the smartphone area, and the Nokia Lumia 800 might prove that device, especially since it is said to only open the series of great Windows Phones that the handset vendor has in store for us.
