Looks amazing but is likely to remain just a concept

Nokia is not running out of ideas when it comes to concept phones. The Finnish company presented numerous concept phones and prototype devices over the last few weeks.

After an interesting “Kinetic Device” was demonstrated at Nokia World 2011, along with a Nokia Twist concept phone, the handset maker has come out with yet another concept phone called Nokia GEM.

Nokia GEM was especially designed to offer a full touchscreen experience. Basically, Nokia turned the entire phone into a touchscreen, so there's no more front case or back cover. We can't even talk about an unibody design.

The concept phone is a tribute to 25th anniversary of the Nokia Research Centre. Developed by a team led by Senior Design Manager Jarkko Saunamäki, Nokia GEM is capable of changing its appearance depending on what function the user selects.

The research team at Nokia thought it would be nice if the GEM could display advertising messages on its back, in order to have a discount on their bills.

Moreover, the back and front of the handset are interactive, allowing users to pinch and zoom a picture in order to fit on the whole phone.

Jarkko Saunamäki, Senior Design Manager at Nokia explained the concept phone: “Now, when you launch an application like the camera, your mobile phone still looks like a mobile phone, but with GEM, when you launch the camera application, the whole phone looks like a camera.”

He added that users “can have one image wrapped around the whole device or one on each side, as demonstrated in the stylish video animation when the woman user photographs some wallpaper and adopts it as the design for her phone casing.”

Nokia GEM can also interact with other phones with the same features, as seen in the video below; it can even display 3D images.

We highly doubt that Nokia GEM will ever be produced for the mass market, but some of the concepts shown may become reality in the future.
