Nintendo of America has announced two important milestones linked to sales of its gaming platforms, saying that both the Wii home console and the DS handhelds have managed to become some of the most successful gaming dedicated devices sold in the United States.

Internal sales figures from Nintendo are showing that the Wii has had another calendar year during which it managed to move more than 7 million devices to gamers, something which no other home console has ever managed.

The lifetime total for the Nintendo Wii has reached and surpassed 34 million units.

Meanwhile the Nintendo DS line up has surpassed the 47 million units sold milestone since it was initially introduced during November 2004, making it the best selling video game system of all time in North America.

These results come during a year when the hardware market has been pretty bad in the United States, with both the Wii and the DS seeing slower sales than during previous years, with both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 threatening its position.

Reggie Fils-Aime, who is the president and the public face of Nintendo of America, has stated, “When we look back at 2010, we see consumers time and again turning to the value and enjoyment of our products.”

He added, “When we look ahead to 2011, we see new portable technology and more great Wii games that need to be seen to be believed.”

In 2011 Nintendo has big plans for the handheld market, getting ready to release the 3DS, which is very important for the gaming industry because it allows gamers to access three dimensional experiences without needing to use any specialized glasses.

There are also rumors that Nintendo is working on a follow-up to the Wii home console, which could be announced in 2011, coming with High Definition graphics and better storage.
