Along with the unveiling of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, Google also went official with the first mobile phone that would run under this OS version, namely Nexus S, a handset manufactured by Samsung.

We already had the chance to take a look at the smartphone, but now it was made official with all of the necessary details on it unveiled to the world, including its specifications list, the release date, or the carrier that would have it on its airwaves.

“Nexus S is the next generation of Nexus devices co-developed by Google and Samsung,” one can read on Google's Phone Gallery. “We co-developed this product with Samsung—ensuring tight integration of hardware and software to highlight the latest advancements of the Android platform,” the company notes on its blog.

The handset comes to shelves with a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor on board, a 4.0 inches touchscreen display that boasts a WVGA (800 x 480 pixels) resolution, along with 16GB of internal memory and 512MB of RAM. According to Google, the 4” Contour Display was designed to fit great in user's hand.

“It comes pre-installed with the best of Google apps and enabled with new and popular features like true multi-tasking, Wi-Fi hotspot, Internet Callling, NFC support, and full web browsing,” Google notes.

“With this device, users will also be the first to receive software upgrades and new Google mobile apps as soon as they become available,” the company adds.

On the back, the mobile phone sports a 5.0 megapixels photo snapper with Flash and video recording capabilities. The handset also comes with WiFi 802.11 b/g/n capabilities, as well as with Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity.

The Nexus S sports a 1500 mAH Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) battery inside, capable of offering up to 6 hours of talk time, or up to 428 hours of standby time. The specs list of this device also includes Accelerometer, GPS receiver, and support for T-Mobile's 3G network in the US.

With Quad-band GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900 Tri-band HSPA: 900, 2100, 1700 HSPA type: HSDPA (7.2Mbps) HSUPA (5.76Mbps) connectivity on board, the new device should hit the shelves come December 16th, via all Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile stores in the U.S.

Moreover, Google announced that Nexus S by Samsung should hit the UK come December 20th via Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy retailers in the country.

All in all, it appears that Google is pretty happy with the new smartphone. “Nexus S is the lead device for the Gingerbread/Android 2.3 release; it’s the first Android device to ship with the new version of the Android platform,” the company notes on its official mobile blog.

“As part of the Nexus brand, Nexus S delivers what we call a “pure Google” experience: unlocked, unfiltered access to the best Google mobile services and the latest and greatest Android releases and updates.” The two videos below should offer more info on the new device.
