14 DAY TRIAL // Australia is yet another market where Nexus One by HTC, the first Google phone on the market, has received an update to the latest flavor of the mobile operating system, namely Gingerbread.
We already knew that the update was coming to Nexus One, since Vodafone, the wireless carrier that brought the device to the Australian market, announced its availability about a week ago.
However, at that time the carrier did not offer specific info on when the software might arrive, but only said that the testing phase was over.
Today, the company made it official that the Android 2.3.3 ‘Gingerbread’ operating system version in on its way to Nexus One devices on its network.
“We just received confirmation from Google that the FOTA release of Android 2.3.3 ‘Gingerbread’ has started for all Google Nexus One users in Australia,” the wireless carrier announced.
As soon as the software is ready for a specific Nexus One unit, the owner will be informed on its availability and will be prompted to download and install it.
One thing that should be noted here is that the update is large in size, and that users should consider downloading it over a WiFi connection if they do not have a data plan, so as to avoid any data charges.
“You should start receiving a notification on your mobile phone soon. This is a large software update so we recommend downloading this file via WiFi connection,” Vodafone notes.
While it is not the latest flavor of Android, 2.3.3 Gingerbread would still pack a wide range of improvements into the mix, at least when compared to the Android 2.2 Froyo OS that it has been running under until now.
The wireless carrier was not specific on how long it could take before all Nexus One devices on its network are updated to the new OS flavor, but we can imagine that it won't take longer than a few weeks.
