Microsoft has just released a new offer for its Xbox Live service, the Refer-a-Friend scheme, which aims at making existing Xbox Live Gold subscribers persuade their Free friends to upgrade their subscriptions.

Microsoft is pretty pleased that more than half of Xbox Live users are using a paid Gold subscription, but this still means that there are a lot of people that aren't paying any money for that service.

As such, after launching the Xbox Live rewards system a few months ago, a new scheme has been revealed, called Refer-a-Friend.

Gold subscribers that recruit their friends will be able to earn promotional Gold tokens, good for one month, which they can give to others in order for them to get a taste of the Gold benefits.

There are a few catches, so check out the official rules below.

-Get your free member friend to go Gold and (1) you and your friend will each get 400 Microsoft Points* or (2) 600 Microsoft Points*, depending on the active offer.

-Get your free member friend to go Gold and (3) you and your friend will get a multiplayer Xbox Live Arcade game of Microsoft's choosing.

-Get your free member friend to try Gold with a promotional token good for 1 month of Gold, and (4) if your friend redeems the token within 30 days, you'll get 200 Microsoft Points*.

-Recruiters can refer up to five friends per day, until the promotion ends on July 1.

-Each recruiter is eligible to receive all four of the offers once during that time. Any foul play ("using multiple/different email addresses, Xbox Live accounts, identities, registrations and logins" etc.) will be grounds for disqualification, but you won't be banned from Xbox Live!

*Fine print: "Tokens to download points will expire on December 31, 2011. Once downloaded, promotional points will expire on June 30, 2012."

Microsoft has been pushing Xbox Live Free users to upgrade to Gold subscriptions for quite some time now, and this offer only aims to further help people join its service.
