Video game publisher Activision has announced that it is working with developer High Moon Studios to create a new entry in the Transformers video game franchise, called Fall of Cybertron, which will be launched at some point during 2012.

The companies say that the new experience will allow players to play as a number of Autobots as they battle the evil Deceptions as their home planet is being destroyed around them, detailing the events that allowed them to leave and end up on Earth.

David Oxford, who is the executive vice president at Activision Publishing, stated when the new game was announced that, “High Moon Studios is an extremely talented development team having raised the bar of gameplay and Transformers authenticity in their games. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is an extraordinary project both for the studio and the Transformers gaming legacy — the stakes are higher and the scale much larger than ever before, and we absolutely cannot wait for fans to see all the new characters and epic action that awaits them.”

Mark Blecher, who is senior vice president of digital media at Hasbro, added, “Hasbro has worked hand in hand with Activision to create a fully original storyline that details the climactic battles leading to the famed exodus of the Transformers characters from Cybertron. Our team at Hasbro is looking forward to exploring and expanding the Transformers story again with an incredible blockbuster video game that will blow fans away next year.”

The game will presumably be aimed mainly at home consoles like the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 and mobile version will also be created.

There's no Transformers movie planned for release during 2012, which means that Fall of Cybertron developers will be able to create an experience which has its own backstory and might manage to deliver more quality than previous movie tie-ins.
