Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have just announced that a new Tomb Raider game will be released and it will act as an origins story for the main heroine of the franchise, Lara Croft.

“Forget everything you know about Tomb Raider, we are exploring things that have never been done before in this game,” said Darrell Gallagher, head of studio, Crystal Dynamics. “This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other.”

According to the development studio, the 15-year old franchise will get back to basics, and players will be able to see a younger, more inexperienced Lara Croft try to survive on an unknown beach.

The premise of the story sounds a bit cliché, but if handled well, it might certainly offer a fresh take on Lara Croft and her adventures.

"After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was traveling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive."

While the new game is hyped as being a complete reboot for the old series, do expect Lara to still have some of her classic moves available, and, of course, raid tombs while trying to survive this new adventure.

Rumors and reports about a Tomb Raider reboot were flying on the web for quite some time, but only after Crystal Dynamics released the Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light spinoff, did they actually gain power.

Previous, full-pledged Tomb Raider games haven't exactly been as successful as Crystal Dynamics hoped for, so perhaps this reboot might be just what the doctor ordered for the prestigious franchise.

As of right now, we only have the details mentioned above, and the cover of Game Informer magazine, which shows a younger and rougher looking Lara Croft, as opposed to her pristine appearance in other titles.
