Kobo, previously known as Shortcovers, is a company with headquarters in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is owned by Rakuten and makes e-readers, as well as applications for the BlackBerry, BlackBerry PlayBook, iPad, iPhone, and Android devices.

The Kobo series of e-readers is more or less the only range of physical products it has on sale, and it is backed by the eBook store of the same name.

There used to be only five e-readers, called Kobo Mini, Kobo Glo, Kobo Touch, Kobo Arc and Kobo Wireless.

Then there was the Kobo Vox, although that one was more of a tablet/e-reader hybrid.

But we digress. What is more important now is that Kobo has prepared a new e-book reader, despite the flagging interest in such things.

Called Aura HD, it measures 6.8 inches in screen diagonal (E Ink panel) and has a processor of 1 GHz clock speed, plus 4 GB of storage space.

“From the beginning, Kobo has pushed the eReading industry to new heights and today is no exception,” said Michael Serbinis, CEO, Kobo.

“Kobo Aura HD is designed for the most passionate booklovers – those who devour hundreds of stories each year – who asked us to create the ultimate eReading experience. Kobo Aura HD is our way of celebrating these customers.”

Kobo will start shipping the Aura HD e-reader in the United Kingdom and Canada, beginning April 25. Pre-orders should have already started, at least in North Americe.

“To us, the Kobo Aura HD is the Porsche of eReaders and is designed for those in the driver’s seat of their eReading adventures,” said Wayne White, EVP and general manager of devices, Kobo.

“It’s fast, powerful, and sleek and pushes the boundaries of eReading the same way our Readers do – together, they’ll know no bounds as they find their next great read.”
