There have certainly been quite a lot of video games based on comic book characters, but only a few managed to shine and bring a solid experience to gamers. One of the most interesting casts of superheroes out there is Marvel's X-Men. Led by Professor Xavier, these mutants fight to protect the rights of everyone on Earth. Without a doubt, one of the most charismatic and troubled members of the X-Men group is Wolverine.

Although he has already starred in a few videogames, which told various parts of his story, none has really managed to develop his character. But now, things are about to change, at least according to Activision, which announced that it would develop a game based on the popular superhero, entitled X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Set to be made by the Raven Software studio, responsible for other games such as Hexen, Star Wars Jedi Knight or X-Men Legends, the title will appear on almost any platform out there, including the PC, the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3, the PlayStation Portable, Nintendo’s Wii and DS. The game will appear on all these platforms in May 2009, with a concrete release schedule to be announced soon.

“We have an amazing team with Raven Studios at the helm, creating what will undoubtedly be the quintessential, true-to-character Wolverine video game experience that fans have been craving,” said Rob Kostich, vice president, global brand management, Activision Publishing, Inc. “X-Men Origins: Wolverine amps up the action by bringing to life Wolverine’s wholly unique skills such as his brute strength, regenerative mutant abilities, and indestructible adamantium claws and skeleton in an immersive experience that is fitting to one of the most enduring and popular characters of all time.”

It will be an action adventure game, whose story is based on the one from the comics and the movie that will be launched soon. It will feature “lightning-quick combat, evasive maneuvers, in-depth combo attacks, and an array of brutal finishing moves,” and will showcase Wolverine's unique self healing power.

All in all, some very interesting things that might make quite a lot of Wolverine fans out there very happy. Let's just hope that the Activision and Raven Software team will make a truly great game.
