Probably the best-sounding speculation I've heard recently

As much as we'd like to get our hands on a new version of the acclaimed Nintendo DS, it won't happen too soon, as the manufacturer recently claimed that any piece of information regarding a new DS Lite is just a speculation and rumor. However, analysts beg to differ, claiming that the new model will be thinner and it'll feature on-board storage plus bigger screens.

Also, the rumored console has lost its GBA port in order to decrease its size. Practically, this is not an entirely new gaming device, but rather an upgraded version of the normal DS Lite, which includes a couple of new features. Adding some storage space to the DS could mean that Nintendo doesn't fear piracy as much as they did before and that the company's ready to work with third party developers.

Till now, this move was regarded as a dangerous one, mostly because Nintendo is one of the top piracy fighters, but they seem to have noticed that third party developers can sometimes create useful content. You might even say that Nintendo has pulled an Apple on us, since Steve Job's company has also claimed that it's now ready to work with such developers. Adding bigger screens to the DS can only mean that we'll get a better gaming experience, while the fact that the new device is thinner, means that the console will be able to fit your schoolbags (or the ladies' purses) better.

I don't know if the rumored console will be ready in time to make it to the game stores' shelves at Christmas time, but it would be a brilliant marketing move for Nintendo. Did you know that the DS is the best selling console right now? Imagine what a new version of the device would do, to a market that already chooses to devour DS-related products...
