Sony has officially revealed the existence of the PlayStation Portable 2, or as the company calls it, the NGP, and the publisher and hardware developer also announced that it would be bringing some of its biggest franchises, like Uncharted and Resistance, to the device.

But both Naughty Dog, the developer that created Uncharted, and Insomniac, the team in charge of Resistance, have said that they are not actually working on the new PlayStation Portable 2 based video games.

The new Uncharted title will be developed by the Sony owned Bend Studio, which created the title Syphon Filter and also worked on the port of Resistance: Retribution.

There are two PlayStation 3 based Uncharted games and its Naughty Dog is now working on Drake's Decemption.

The Resistance PSP 2 title is being created by Nihilistic Software, a company that is also working on Move motion tracking powered game Heroes on the Move.

Insomniac is working on Resistance 3 at the moment.

Nihilistic was also involved, earlier in its history, in the console development of the canceled Starcraft: Ghost spin off.

Traditionally development for handheld platforms like the PSP 2 and the Nintendo DS family is handled by other companies than those who do the work on home consoles.

Still it must be somewhat of a letdown for those watching the development of the PSP 2 that two of the most important developers linked to Sony, Naughty Dog and Insomniac, are not working directly on titles for the new device.

Sony has also said that the PlayStation Portable 2 will get new installments in important franchises like Metal Gear Solid from Konami, Yakuza from SEGA and Call of Duty from Activision.

The PSP 2 is officially in development but currently does not have a launch date, although Sony is saying that at least one big market will get access to it before the end of the year.
