You know, it's very interesting to see just how rumors regarding NVIDIAs GPUs tend to pop up exactly one day before the major launch of the new AMD Radeon HD 6800 aside, but leaving these...well, we'll just call them “mild insinuations” aside, the truth of the matter is that the GPU manufacturer might have pretty major surprises in store for the near future, at least if some report from the Taiwanese online press are to be believed.

The report we're talking about belongs to Digitimes, who's known to have nailed quite a few ones right, but on the other hand, they've also had their fair share of duds, and talks about a forthcoming NVIDIA graphics card model, the GTX 580, which is slated as being a lot more powerful than the company's current flagship, the GeForce GTX 480.

In fact, the sources quoted by the respective report (apparently, close to video cards manufactures) claim that the GTX 580 is 20 percent more powerful than the GTX 480, which sorts of puts it into a league of its own.

But that's just the start, since it would seem that, after the GF110-powered GTX 580 hits the market, NVIDIA plans to out a whole lot more GPUs, including the GF112, GF114, and GF119, to market in 2011.

Now, we can't help but wonder, is a more powerful (and also more expensive) graphics card what users want right now, or should NVIDIA perhaps focus on a series of GPUs more readily available for mainstream consumers?

Of course, providing overclocking headroom and all sorts of such extra features is all fine and dandy, but the economic crisis is far from over in many parts of the world, with customers being extremely careful as far as their IT budgets and spending habits are concerned.
