The first season of “Smash” on NBC was a hit, with both critics and fans singing its praises, which was also noticed immediately in the ratings. The second season, returning after a 9-month hiatus, didn’t fare so well.

In fact, ratings have been going down since the season premiere, which had about 4.5 million viewers and a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic.

So, NBC decided to pull the plug on it after season 2 wraps up, as star Katharine McPhee confirms on her Twitter.

“Thk u to everyone who watched Smash! Been an amazing ride. & thanks to @nbc 4 the opportunity 2 play a great gal such as Karen. So grateful,” she writes on her feed.

“Smash,” also starring Anjelica Houston and Debra Messing, has been moved to Saturday at 9 p.m., where it will finish its second season – and then go off the air for good.
