Motorola announced recently that it managed to successfully complete and pass the time-division duplex long-term evolution (TD-LTE) key functionalities test that has been launched by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The test was aimed at examining the high-bandwidth network capacity, along with a series of important TD-LTE features, and marks another step made towards the commercial availability of TD-LTE. Motorola is the first company to announce the completion of the testing. Moreover, the achievement also shows Motorola's commitment in delivering new technologies for wireless carriers in China.

The company stated that at the moment it was ready to start multi-site/multi-UE testing via TD-LTE field trials. According to Motorola, its key trial achievements include: - High performance in system equipment platforms such as reaching a peak throughput in excess of 100 megabits per second (Mbps) - Successful demonstration of key TD-LTE features including hand-over, multi-antenna, quality of service (QoS), power control and more - Adoption of third-party user equipment (UE) test to guarantee standard compliance

“Motorola is committed to broadband and 4G developments and has made significant progress in TD-LTE commercialization in 2009,” said Dr. Mohammad Akhtar, vice president and general manager for the Wireless Networks division of Motorola's Home & Networks Mobility business in Asia Pacific. “The trial success at this stage announced today once again demonstrates the maturity of our TD-LTE solution. The achievement also demonstrates the cellular community's readiness to move into networks that make true personal broadband on the move a reality. We are looking forward to carrying this commitment into 2010 and leading the market in further development and deployment of TD-LTE technology.”

A TD-LTE working group has been established by MIIT in June, 2009, and it includes China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom, the three large carriers in the country, as well as other industry players, such as system, chipsets or terminal equipment manufacturers. Motorola is one of the active members of the group, aiming at proving its leadership position in TD-LTE. This is also showed by the fact that it has been selected as the primary TD-LTE solution partner for the indoor coverage at the World Expo 2010 Shanghai, China.
