T-Mobile and Motorola have just announced the availability of the long-awaited Android 2.2 Froyo update for Motorola DEFY smartphone.

According to the carrier, the update is being pushed OTA (over-the-air), but requires users to manually check for an update by tapping on the Settings menu / About phone and System updates.

The 34.4.9 software upgrade for Motorola DEFY is approximately 120MB and it is recommended to have the battery at least 50% charged.

The use a Wi-Fi connection for faster download and to avoid extra data charges is recommended as well.

Motorola has previously promised the Froyo software update for the rugged DEFY Android smartphone several months ago, but vaguely stated that it will be available sometime in Q2 2011.

The DEFY is the latest Android rugged smartphone delivered by Motorola and has been introduced in the United States through T-Mobile.

The phone sports a large 3.7-inch WVGA touchscreen display, a 5-megapixel rear camera with autofocus and LED flash, CrystalTalk PLUS technology for crisp sound during phone calls, as well as DLNA capabilities.

The handset was released on the market with the Android 2.1 out-of-the-box, as well as MOTOBLUR UI on top.

However, with the new software upgrade the phone's performance will be enhanced resulting in faster user interface, application operation and Web browsing.

Motorola DEFY with Android 2.2 features support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1, which enables users to access rich Web content and games.

In addition, applications can now be stored on the device's microSD card and set to automatically update by checking “allow automatic updating” under each app's page in Android Market.

Other new features offered by the Android 2.2 Froyo update include Wi-Fi Hotspot, Digital Keyboard (added punctuation to the suggestion ribbon), Dialer search (phone numbers and contacts can now be searched from the dialer screen), Task Manager, LinkedIn, updated user interface in the Gallery menu.
