Boosting the Wii

Another week brings on another set of charts for videogames and hardware sales from the Japanese market. And after three weeks at the top, Dragon Quest IX, the newest role playing game from Square Enix, has been dethroned by a new release, Monster Hunter 3 from Capcom.

As a side effect, the success of the fresh title has managed to also make the Nintendo Wii the best selling console in the Land of the Rising Sun.

The Nintendo Wii sold more than 95,000 in one week, beating the DSi handheld which moved only 73,710 units. The Japanese company must be pretty content with the fact that its two gaming consoles are dominating the charts, with the closest competitor being the PlayStation Portable from Sony, sitting in third spot with sales of around 33,000.

The older DS Lite has managed to sell about 12,000 by itself, while the PlayStation 3 and the PS2 are holding fifth and sixth spot at 8,760 and 3,617. The Xbox 360 is again bringing up the rear in Japan.

As mentioned, Monster Hunter 3 is the new best seller. The Nintendo Wii release moved more than half a million copies in just one week, and Sony must be biting its nails for not convincing Capcom to continue creating the game for its platform. Overall, almost 10 million units of Monster Hunter copies have been sold world wide.

Dragon Quest IX is still selling well, shipping 180,000 in one week and totaling more than 3.3 millions for its run until now, while Tomodachi Connection from Nintendo, also for the DS, moved 82,000 to get third spot. Wii Sports Resort for the Nintendo Wii sold 66,000 in one week, while the first new entry in the chart is Puyo Puyo 7 from SEGA, with 52,000 units sold.
