The two companies have decided to expand their joint venture started in October 2001 beyond the cell phone manufacturing and to develop software that will link their electronic devices through the wireless networks available worldwide.

As the Ericsson's director of product strategy Per Nordlof has said, the future jointly developed softwares will cover the mobile and broadband TV area and the high quality of such solutions will eventually lead to the migration of the telecom operators on the broadband networks.

He also said that, within the two forthcoming years, almost 30 percent of the mobile phone users will be watching television programs on their cellphones while on-the-go and during a news conference that "there is a strong confidence between Ericsson and Sony after the success of the handset business and we will work to develop software that connects the gadgets in the homes with the outer world.[..] Broadband TV will be an important factor. Most telecom operators realize they will have to offer TV in order not to lose customers."

Some of these broadband TV solutions demonstrated by the two companies are based on the Digital Living Network Alliance, which is a standard that allows the sharing of content between digital devices over a home network, and they may be available on the market beginning with the second half of 2007 as Nordlof also declared.
