Before the end of this month, a new flavor of Internet Explorer 10 should arrive included in the upcoming Windows 8 Consumer Preview that Microsoft is preparing for the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Before that, however, those who chose to install Windows 8 Developer Preview on their computers can get the browser on their devices to a spin via the new special webpage that Microsoft created for them.

The Redmond-based company has been long touting the great advantages that its Internet Explorer 9 and newer can deliver when compared to other browsers for the Windows 7 (or Windows 8) platform.

Today, a new test page to certify what these app versions have to deliver is available. Called “Love is in the Air,” it was also meant to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

With hardware accelerated HTML5 capabilities, Internet Explorer 10 in Windows 8 will be able to provide users with great performance, Microsoft explains.

“This experience brings together hardware-accelerated HTML5 canvas, SVG, CSS transforms & transitions, WOFF, audio, and more,” Rob Mauceri, group program manager, Internet Explorer, notes in a blog post.

“On Windows Developer Preview with support for multi-touch in IE10, you can reach out and swipe to reveal a special message of love -or just use your mouse.

“If you think your browser can keep up, turn up the volume to 1000 floating hearts. Using another browser and not feeling the love? Try it with IE9 (or IE10) using the hardware acceleration built into the browser.”

We took the page for a spin on IE9, Firefox 11 (Beta), Chrome 17.0.963.46 and Opera 11.61. While Microsoft’s and Mozilla’s browsers had no problems rendering the page even with thousands of hearts purring in, Google’s and Opera’s browsers did not manage to pass the 2 fps mark.

Have a look at the images below to get a better idea of what the three browsers were able to deliver in terms of performance. You can also test your browser on your own, via the said Love is in the Air page.

Hello Mr. Arghire,
Could you also provide some figures you guys got just for some fun with comparisons? For example, I am having 60 fps for 250 hearts & 32 fps for 1000 hearts with IE9 [32-bit] on Windows Vista. I have hardware acceleration enabled.
And come to think of it, this is from a system which has Intel GMA950 with 945GM chipset and Intel Pentium [Yonah] processor dating to 2007..!

I attached the above screenshots specifically to show the performance of the said browsers. As you can see above, IE9 got 60fps with 500 hearts, but went down to 17 at 4,000. Firefox was actually better than IE, delivering 42fps with 2,000 hearts (vs 35fps).
