Shigeru Miyamoto, the initial creator of The Legend of Zelda franchise, believes that Retro Studios, best known for their work on Metroid Prime, could be entrusted with the creation of a game in the Link starring series.

The legendary game creator tells The Official Nintendo Magazine that, “The possibility of Retro Studios making a new Zelda with a good proposal isn’t a farfetched idea at all and could be possible.”

He adds, “Even if Retro Studios is qualified Nintendo would have to be in very close contact with the company that were to create this Zelda and, being outside Japan, the distance and the timezone differences would make the communication more difficult.”

Retro Studios is based in Austin, Texas while the core development studios for Nintendo are in Japan, which would make such a process a complex but not impossible endeavor.

The relationship between Shigeru Miyamoto and Retro Studios goes back to the early 2000’s, before the launch of the Game Cube, when he was impressed by a game engine they developed and suggested that it should be used for the Metroid series.

Since then, Retro has created sequels for the franchise and, more recently, it has delivered Mario Kart 7 on the Nintendo 3DS handheld, which has been very well received by players.

The most recent Legend of Zelda video game is Skyward Sword, which was delivered on the Wii during 2011.

Nintendo is surely preparing to announce a new game in the series for the new Wii U home console, but the company has not offered any details on what story it might tell or how it might use the unique capabilities of the new gaming platform.

Japanese video game developers have been under pressure lately to create titles that appeal to Western audiences and working with developers from North America and Europe is a good way of achieving this objective.
