Konami is announcing that Metal Gear Online now has more than one million members. The multiplayer game was launched in June 2008 as a companion product to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Initial plans called for the title to be sold separately, but Konami feared that the game would not be attractive if it was not associated with Solid Snake and the closing chapter of the videogame saga.

Basically, Metal Gear Online is a team based shooter, where no one is Solid Snake but everyone must try to be stealthy as they move in for the kill. The game was judged to be a worthy effort, even if it did not come close to multiplayer giants like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare or Halo 3.

Konami is celebrating the fact that the million milestone has been reached and is getting ready to launch Metal Gear Online: Commemorative Campaign. It will begin on November 25 and 10,000 reward points are up for grabs for all those players who log in and play until December 9. In Metal Gear Online, the points can be used to buy more weapons and other in game items.

30 lucky players from Europe, North America and Japan will have a chance to win an additional 1,000,000 reward points as part of a commemorative draw. For a period which ends on December 31 the two mini expansions for Metal Gear Online, Gene and Meme will be sold for only 145.99 dollars in order to draw in even more players to the online game.

Konami recently said that more than 3 million copies of Metal Gear Solid 4 had been sold worldwide since launch. The fact that only one million people tried the online component shows the fact that Metal Gear fans are more interested in single player than in multiplayer.
