MetaSquares, a relatively new puzzle game for the iPhone and iPod touch developed by MetaTools, has just received its first update. The enhanced version of the game can be acquired today from the iTunes App Store.

The update is free to download and install for existing MetaSquares customers, while owners of an iPhone or iPod touch with firmware 2.0 (or later) installed can buy a fresh copy of MetaSquares for $2.99. According to the changelog, the new release adds multiplayer support (two player support on the same device), “as well as some foreign language support and minor fixes,” according to apptism (currently tracking 4,579 iPhone Apps). Supported languages include English, German, Japanese, Spanish, according to the iTunes App Store description.

MetaTools contracted puzzle and computer game designer Scott Kim to make the puzzles inside MetaSquares. Kim's puzzles were featured in the "Scientific American" magazine, according to the company, while the initial concept for MetaSquares was created by the same man during the mid 1990s.

MetaSquares players enter an eight by eight board in which they must create more squares than their opponents. Two players take turns placing pieces on the board while trying to get all four corners of a square. Squares can be formed at any angle and are worth more points the bigger they are. Controls include tapping the screen, or using gestures. Games are usually two to three minutes long, according to the makers.

The updated version (1.1.0) of MetaSquares can be found on the iTunes App Store, here (download size 1.9 MB). The new release is priced the same as the initial version of the puzzle game launched in August. As an existing owner of the app, you can simply tap the game's icon on your iPhone's screen (provided that it's displaying the availability of an update) to upgrade to the latest version.
