From time to time, we happen to come across certain devices that seem to be taken right out some Sci-Fi movie portraying a sort of cyber-punk future, and that's exactly the case with the device you'll read about as follows, namely the Kitara from Misa Digital Instruments.

After previewing the concept of a digital guitar earlier this year (and getting some pretty positive feedback afterwards), Misa Digital Instruments decided to turn the initial prototype into a full-fledged, market-ready product and officially launched the Kitara and Kitara Limited Edition, the first-of-its-kind 100% digital guitar.

The Kitara includes an innovative multifunction touchscreen, MIDI controls and an on-board polyphonic synthesizer with effects, allowing guitarists to fully express their musical vision.

Instead of using strings, guitarists control sound through their fingertips, using the touchscreen and fret board to play, enhance and alter sounds in real-time.

The Kitara digital guitar also sports an 1.25-inch audio output, a regular 3.5-mm headphone out, runs on a Linux operating system and comes with 100+ digital sounds, 6 pre-loaded effects, 24 frets and 144 notes.

Now, if you're wondering just what the Kitara Limited Adition adds to the basic Kitara design, the answer is quite simple: the material the case is built from.

So, while the Kitara packs a body of high-density injection-molded ABS polymer, the Limited Edition features a precision-etched body of solid aluminum, elegantly serialized for authenticity, while also being pretty much built-to-order).

Of course, since we're talking about some high-end, latest-gen instruments, it should come as no surprise that their pricing is actually pretty high, the Kitara selling for $849 US, while the Kitara Limited Edition going up to a whopping $2,899 US (both are available for pre-order as we speak, but will probably become officially available after they're officially shown to the world during CES 2011).
