A new version of MeeGo has just been made official, namely MeeGo 1.2, released only for large devices, but set to land on mobile phones too in the not too far future.

New handsets powered by MeeGo should be unveiled to the world soon, expected to hit the market only next year, but the platform is already available for owners of a Nokia N900 device.

Dubbed MeeGo 1.2 Developer Edition, the new platform release was meant for Nokia N900 alone, and should bring forth a wide range of new features when compared to what was included in the previous version of the platform.

The Nokia N900 was not designed for MeeGo, and those who would like to install the new mobile operating system on this device should go for the Developer Edition (DE) of the platform.

“When using MeeGo on the Nokia N900, or other ARM-based handset, it's recommended to use MeeGo Developer Edition,” a post on the MeeGo wiki reads.

“Developer Edition (DE) is an edition of the core MeeGo 1.2. The DE is developed with the ARM and handset compatibility in mind, this way developers already owning a N900 device may start developing with it immediately.”

We should also note that it is recommended that users would install MeeGo DE as dual boot to N900, leaving Maemo on the device as well.

Those who would like to put MeeGo 1.2 on their Nokia N900 devices should head here to the said wiki page to download the San Francisco release of the platform, which is the image released at MeeGo conference.

Those who would like to learn more on the aforementioned dual-boot solution, which would have the Meego installed as dual boot with the Maemo 5 fremantle, should head to this post on the MeeGo wiki.

Just keep in mind that putting MeeGo 1.2 DE on Nokia N900 would make it suitable for development / hacking, and that this was not meant for every day use.
