After Electronic Arts confirmed last week that almost 900,000 copies of Mass Effect 3 were sold in the game's first 24 hours of availability, the company has now revealed that over 3.5 million copies of the game were shipped to retailers all around the world.

Mass Effect 3 is the first truly massive game of the year, delivering a conclusion to the trilogy of games that focused on its protagonist, Commander Shepard. The game was finally launched last week onto the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, breaking pre-order records for the series.

Now, after sharing the first bits of sales data, publisher Electronic Arts has presented the number of copies it shipped to retailers worldwide: 3.5 million.

“We have been truly humbled by the amazing response from fans and critics for Mass Effect 3,” said Dr. Ray Muzyka, Co-Founder of BioWare and General Manager of EA’s BioWare Label. “The game is a gripping, engaging experience where the decisions and choices you make will truly stay with you for the months and years ahead. We are all incredibly proud of Casey Hudson and the teams in Edmonton and Montreal for delivering the best game BioWare has ever made.”

At least 900,000 copies of those 3.5 million were sold in the U.S. during the game's first 24 hours of availability and you can be sure that lots more were purchased by gamers from Europe and the rest of the world throughout last week.

The game was also available digitally through Electronic Arts' Origin distribution service, so you can bet that plenty of PC gamers decided to get it as a digital download and not as a retail copy.

According to last week's statistics, the From Ashes day-one DLC for Mass Effect 3 is also a success, as more than 40 percent of people who got the game also bought the add-on.
