Lots of choices and actions come full circle in the new game

Mass Effect 3 has been out for over a week and, while some may not approve of it, has impressed millions of gamers from all over the world.

While the game may be a guided experience, instead of an open world one like Skyrim, it still manages to portray all sorts of things depending on what players did in previous titles, provided they imported their save games.

I’m now going to highlight some of the variations that can happen in the first half of the game depending on your past actions. Be careful, as some pretty big spoilers are present.

The first major impact of importing a previous save game is related to the number of characters you get to meet along the way.

If you had major casualties during the suicide mission in Mass Effect 2, then you might not get to see Mordin during the genophage quest line. What’s more, if you chose to kill Wrex during the first game, then his brother, Wreav, will represent the Krogans in the new game.

Even smaller details, like the loyalty of characters from previous games, also have an impact on the current experience.

Case in point is Mordin’s role during the genophage mission on Tuchanka. If you didn’t do his loyalty mission in the second game, then he won’t be able to help Eve, the female Krogan, before meeting up with Commander Shepard.

You also get a different experience if you buy the From Ashes DLC for the game, as the new companion, Javik, interacts with a variety of other characters, often with some hilarious results, as I’ve highlighted in yesterday’s Gamer Diary.

Mass Effect 3 is currently available for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms. The game already has a downloadable add-on on sale, in the form of From Ashes, which costs 800 BioWare Points, 800 MS Points, or $9.99/€9.99 for owners of the regular game. Those who got the N7 Collector’s Edition or Digital Deluxe version receive the DLC for free.
