PlayStation 3 owners will be in for a major treat next month, when BioWare and EA finally release Mass Effect 2 on the console, not only because they will experience one of this year's greatest role-playing games, but also because they'll get a technological sneak peek at the next title in the series, Mass Effect 3.

We've already talked a lot about Mass Effect 2 for the PlayStation 3, but now the game's producer, Jesse Houston, revealed that the upcoming title would be running on the graphics engine that is going to underpin next year's Mass Effect 3.

"One of the first things you're going to see is improved graphics," explained game producer Jesse Houston on the BioWare podcast.

"We actually created the engine for Mass Effect 3 and used that to make Mass Effect 2 PS3. So we took the content, the story and all of the other assets that made up Mass Effect 2 and we put it into the Mass Effect 3 engine."

Besides the overhauled graphics, PlayStation 3 owners will be able to enjoy all of the downloadable content released up until now for the game right off the Blu-ray disc, but also get new packs through the game's Cerberus Network.

Another advantage of the PlayStation 3 edition of Mass Effect 2 is that players won't need to swap discs mid-game, like how they did with the Xbox 360 version of the game.

Mass Effect 2 for the PS3, in case you still haven't heard, will include an interactive comic book, which will introduce players to the story of the first Mass Effect, as well as allow them to make six crucial decisions that are going to impact their own playthrough of the new game.

A demo for Mass Effect 2 will be out on the PlayStation Network on December 21, for US gamers, and one day later for European ones.

The full game is set to be launched on January 18 in the US.
