The upcoming release of Mass Effect 2 on the PlayStation 3 will net customers even more free downloadable content, as BioWare, its developer, announced that a special weapon and an armor set could be taken for free, for a limited time.

Mass Effect 2 for the PlayStation 3 is almost a year late on the platform, as the game appeared at the beginning of 2010 on the PC and Xbox 360.

The title is bringing a lot of the downloadable content released up until now for the game, however, so that players won't feel like they've gotten a sub-par version.

In order to sweeten the deal even more, and make people purchase Mass Effect 2 in the first month, BioWare has just posted a special announcement on its website.

"Until February 23rd, 2011, Mass Effect 2 players on Playstation 3 can download the Terminus Armor and M-490 Blackstorm Projector Weapon free of charge from the PSN Store. After Feb 23rd, the Terminus Gear will be available as paid DLC."

These special items will join up with story-based DLC like Kasumi: Stolen Memory, Overlord or the most recent one, Lair of the Shadow Broker.

Mass Effect 2 for the PlayStation 3 is, according to BioWare, the closest thing to a Game of the Year edition for the title, and will introduce PlayStation 3 owners to the Mass Effect universe, seeing as how the original game wasn't released for the platform.

In order to supplement this, Mass Effect 2 will have a special interactive comic that will allow players to make certain decisions which will impact their playthrough of the actual game.

What's more, BioWare stated that Mass Effect 2 is based on the engine of the upcoming Mass Effect 3, so the graphics and effects will be enhanced.

Mass Effect 2 for the PlayStation 3 is set to be launched on January 18, in North America, and January 21, in Europe.

Right now, BioWare is working hard on its next big release, Dragon Age 2, set to appear this spring, and Mass Effect 3, which will arrive around the winter holiday season.
