Nintendo has announced that Super Mario Galaxy sold 500,000 copies in its debut week in the United States, becoming the fastest selling Nintendo Wii and Mario game in history.

But Mario Galaxy is not a bestseller worldwide. For instance, in Japan Mario Party 8 sales are still better, in the United Kingdom it only reached number 5 in the sales chart and these are not the only places where the game is not breaking any records. But the United States community simply seems to love this game.

George Harrison, senior vice president of Nintendo America, said: "Super Mario Galaxy had the strongest one-week debut of any Wii game to date and has also become the best-selling Mario title ever in its first week, with US sales of more than 500,000, based on internal sales figures."

Super Mario Galaxy was number one bestseller game on Amazon.com for four weeks, based on pre-orders. Apart from the record sales, this latest Mario game was, for a short while, also ranked number one best reviewed game of all time on GameRankings.com but now dropped to the second place behind the record holder - Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

In Super Mario Galaxy players run, jump and battle enemies as they explore different planets in the galaxy. Since this game makes full use of all the features of the Wii Remote, players have to do all kinds of things to succeed...

Titles in the Mario series have sold, since the release of the first game in the series, more than 198 million copies worldwide. If neither these sales, nor the reviews are able to convince you this is a game worth trying, your only option might be going to the nearest video games shop and buy it. The holidays are coming, anyway.
