When smartphones have chemistry

After O2 Asia was bought by Telefonica back in November, the company now known as MWG (Mobile and Wireless Group) launched a news site. That might not seem like a big deal, but with the launch came two pre-announced Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phones: Zinc II and Atom V.

From the pictures, both phones look pretty sleek, but the tech specs sound even better. Clearly, the MWG Zinc II is the successor of the O2 Xda Zinc.

Zinc II is a slider handset that features a full QWERTY keypad. Another thing that makes it interesting is the fact that it's a lot slimmer than the original O2 Xda Zinc and has more great features beside its exclusive new design.

The phone, pretty humble in its dimensions (only 109.5 x 59 x 17.5 mm), runs on Windows Mobile 6 Professional platform, features UMTS tri-band and GSM quad-band network compatibility, and also the mighty HSDPA that allows users to reach download speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps. The device is powered by a Samsung 500 MHz processor and embeds 256MB ROM and 64MB SDRAM of memory. The 71.1 mm (2.8 inch) TFT QVGA touchscreen is big enough for users to watch most of the multimedia apps. The device also has microSD card slot, which lets users expand the available memory. More features include FM radio with RDS and 2.0 Megapixel camera. Last but not least, the Zinc II will guide you around due to its GPS SirF Star III receiver.

The second phone that was shown on the site was the Atom V. The device looks stylish and special, which is admirable if we take into consideration the fact that this is the first Windows Mobile device exclusively designed and launched by MWG. The phone will definitely appease fashionistas. It parades a deep blue design, with a waistline of only 14.95mm (0.58 inch).

Like the previous pre-announced device, Atom V runs on Windows Mobile 6 Professional platform, it features UMTS tri-band and GSM quadband network compatibility, as well as HSDPA 3.6 Mbps technology. It is powered by an Intel PXA270 520MHz CPU and embeds 256MB ROM and 64MB SDRAM memory. The Pocket PC offers microSD card slot, a 3MP camera, integrated FM Radio and GPS guidance.

If you think it is worth buying one of these Pocket PCs, then you can acquire either one, for around $600 USD (Atom V) or $680 USD (Zinc II).
