Twitter may have been a hit with the geek and tech savvy crowd initially, but it has been a mainstream phenomenon for quite a while now. And what better proof than who was the most popular Twitter user, Britney Spears.

But the key is 'was,' since Lady Gaga managed to upstage the pop superstar and become the most followed Twitter user with 5.78 million fans, just enough to snatch the first place from Britney who has 'only' 5.71 million. But at the rate both are gaining new followers, the gap is probably going to get bigger and fast.

Lady Gaga, not one to miss an opportunity for self-promotion to connect with her fans, aka little monsters, tweeted about the fact and even uploaded a YouTube video which is, well, interesting.

So, what does this mean for Twitter? Absolutely nothing, it's just one celebrity trading places with another. The vast majority of extremely popular Twitter users are celebrities (or presidents of the US) though how much influence, or record sales, comes with the title is debatable.

At the moment the top five Twitter users are, in order, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Ashton Kutcher, Ellen Degeneres and Barack Obama. All have over five million followers and they're the only ones to have passed the five-million mark. Teen sensation Justin Bieber will join them soon, he has 4.7 million followers at the moment.

Lady Gaga is the queen of Facebook as well, when it comes to celebrities. Well, alive celebrities, in any case, Michael Jackson is still the most popular person on the social network with over 19 million fans.

But Lady Gaga still commands a respectable 16 million fans on Facebook and the number is growing at a very steady pace. Since social networking is still very much in the early days, you can expect a lot more records to be broken in a short period of time.
