Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless has added a new Android-based smartphone to its offering, the LG Vortex, an affordable device that went on sale in other parts of the world as part of the handset vendor's LG Optimus series.

The handset arrived at Verizon with Google's Android 2.2 operating system on board, while sporting a price tag of $79.99 upon the signing of a two-year contract agreement with the wireless carrier.

The new smartphone comes with a 3.2-inch touchscreen display that boasts a HVGA resolution, and sports a 3.2 megapixel photo snapper on the back, with video recording capabilities, as well as a MSM7627 600Mhz application processor.

At the same time, the LG Vortex offers great Internet capabilities via a WebkitHTML5–based Browser, along with Facebook for LG and Twitter for LG Apps, Skype mobile, Bing Maps/Search, and Google Apps (YouTube, Google Latitude, and Google Calendar).

The specifications list of the new device includes Wi–Fi 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth connectivity, A–GPS/S–GPS for Location applications, support for 3G networks, or 3.5mm Headset Jack.

Not to mention that it comes with a microSD memory card slot included into the mix, with support for up to 32GB of external storage space, and with a 2GB microSD preinstalled.

“First time smartphone users aren’t looking for the most elaborate phone on the market, they are looking for a phone that does what it should, and does it brilliantly,” the wireless carrier notes on its website.

“LG Vortex provides mobile features and easy functionality for the first time smartphone user. With intuitive Android 2.2, and Bing Search, they can find exactly what’s on their mind; and with VZ Navigator they’ll arrive exactly where they wanted to go.

“With a large touchscreen incorporating Swype, they wave goodbye to tired thumbs, and say hi to effortless touches. Meaning, from day one, they will be using and enjoying, not struggling through a frustrating learning process.”

Measuring 4.47 x 2.32 x 0.52 inches and weighing in at 4.44 oz, the new mobile phone packs a 1500 mAh battery inside, capable of delivering up to 450 minutes of talk time, or up to 500 hours of standby time.
