LG Optimus Black Getting Android 2.3 Gingerbread in India

LG promised Gingerbread for some of its Optimus series smartphones a few months ago, but the Korean handset maker has yet to make the update available for some of these devices.

 

In fact, LG said that Android 2.3 Gingerbread update would roll out on November 1, 2011, for the Optimus 2X, in the week commencing November 21 for the Optimus 3D, as well as in the week commencing November 28 for the Optimus Black.

 

Although the scheduler only included release dates for the unlocked European versions of the smartphones mentioned above, LG customers living in other regions were expecting closer release dates for their updates.

 

Unfortunately, it took LG quite a while to deliver the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update to some of its Optimus series smartphones. In this regard, it appears that the update has reached Optimus Black owners living in India.

 

According to the folks over at AndroidOS, LG India has started deploying the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for LG Optimus Black. However, this is only available via LG software update tool.

 

Aside from getting its firmware version bumped to Android 2.3, the update brings several important enhancements and performance improvements:

 

- Improved power management;

- Enhanced mobile gaming experience;

- Improved UI to enable faster access and control and a more intuitive user experience;

- One-touch word selection and copy/paste;

- Better Download management;

- Support for new media formats such as AAC, AVC, MPEG 4 and H263.

 

In addition, new features have also been included, such as:

 

- Active app management, shortcuts, widgets, icons, app groups, updated calendar options, camera geotagging, better email synching and more precise camera auto-focus;

- App updates and pre-loaded Google Plus app.

 

It will be interesting to see if LG also offers an Ice Cream Sandwich update to some of these old Optimus series smartphones, though we doubt this will happen anytime soon.
