With every day that passes it seems that we are getting closer and closer to the day when CCFL lit LCD panels will become a thing of the past as LED panels shipments continue to grow, LED penetration in LCD TV panels rising from 18.5 percent in Q2 to 25.9 percent in Q3.

Translated in hard figures, this means that LED panel shipments grew from about 10.2 million in Q2 2010 to 14.9 million in Q3 2010, a 46 percent quarter to quarter increase.

Although it covers only LCD TVs, DisplaySearch study, further confirms what we have come to witness in the last few months in the computer world as more and more manufacturers have been announcing new monitor models that drop the regular CCFL lamps in favor of LED backlit panels.

This is also the case when it comes down to laptop manufacturers, as most of the models that have become available lately have featured LED backlighting.

In the mobile space, this technology's adoption rate is helped by the fact that it comes with a lower power draw compared to that of CCFL lamps, enabling mobile device manufacturers to further improve the battery life of their products.

The situation is similar in the LCD TV world, although, this time, manufacturers still sees LED backlighting as something more suited for high end solutions, in particular larger sized 40 inch, 42 inch, 47 inch, 52 inch and 55 inch panels.

For sizes such as 32 inch, CCFL panels still remain the preferred option, although these don't offer the same image quality as their LED counterparts.

End of it all, I must say these are indeed good news for consumers since we are bound to see more LCD TVs that get LED backlit panels in the future, these dropping in price as the number of such solutions grows in size. (via TechEye).
