Killzone 3 was finally confirmed by Sony in the latest issue of GamePro. It will be one of the titles that will lead the PlayStation 3D offensive, the developer promising that the effects will be incredible and that this will be a game changer in terms of 3D technology. The combat will not really see any changes but will be enhanced by the addition of a jet pack and deeper melee options.

The jet pack will function both as a locomotion device and as a weapon, as a machine gun will be mounted on top of it. Guerrilla Games, the developer, is boasting that it will be easier to control and maneuver than in other games and that it will be used to navigate some platforming level akin to Super Mario Bros. or Uncharted. Another new weapon will be Wasp, a gun that will launch a flurry of rockets at the enemies.

Story-wise, this game is set to explore the Helghast culture and language and to show off their human side or what is left of it. They are said to be even meaner combatants this time around, as they blame the player's faction, the ISA, for everything wrong that has happened to them. The levels will take place in many diverse settings, the only one being talked about at this time being an arctic environment. The feeling that the developers are aiming for is similar to that in the movie Inglorious Basterds, that is, being in a place far away from one’s home and outnumbered and surrounded by enemies.

Killzone is Sony's main first-person shooter franchise for the PlayStation 3, aiming to compete with Microsoft's Halo series. Killzone 2 was launched, exclusively on the PS3, last year, in February, to wide critical acclaim and sold over one million copies worldwide. No release date has been announced for the third game in the series, but more will probably be revealed at E3 2010.
